Mo Weldon
November 14, 2008

Mo Weldon
It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of a good friend,
Mo Weldon. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts.
Mo Weldon of Western KY SchH Club passed away last night following a bad traffic
accident. Mo was a longtime member of USA starting back in the mid 1980's. He began
his life with the United Schutzhund Clubs of America as a member of the old Southern
Indiana SchH Club located in New Albany, Indiana with Larry Cleamons and Matt Duffy.
He later moved to Kentucky and trained with the Kentuckiana Schutzhund Club before
moving south to Alabama and then back to the Bowling Green, KY area.
Mo and his wife, Tammy, have been the training directors and the driving force
behind Western KY Schutzhund Club for the past several years. Many of you that have
trialed at National Events over the past decade may have had the opportunity to
get to meet Mo as the trial chairman for the 2003 North American and FH Championships
that was hosted by Western KY SchH Club and the Tracking Co-ordinater and/or track
layer for several of our USA National and Regional Events.
I will share more information about visitation and services as soon as the information
becomes available and have it placed on the website as well.
Lyle Roetemeyer
USA President
Mo Weldon, 46, died in a five
car crash on Indiana State Road 111 in Floyd County Indiana near Lousiville,
Kentucky. He and Tammy have a five year old son, David. Memorial services will be
held at 10am Monday, November 17 at the Owen Funeral Home in Louisville, Kentucky.
Visitation hours are Saturday 5-8pm and Sunday, 9am-8pm at the funeral home. The
following link is to the obituary in the Louisville Courier-Journal, Mo Weldon . It has an on-line
guestbook if you wish to share any memories of Mo. Guest Book

South Michigan Schutzhund and Police Club Helper Seminar
South Michigan Schutzhund and Police Club hosted a two day helper seminar and USA
helper classification on April 19 & 20, 2008 with Mid-East Regional Director and
teaching helper Mark Scarberry. The club’s goals were to not just have Mark demonstrate
proper trial work, but also to provide instruction on developing puppies, young
dogs and fine tuning the titled dogs.
Saturday dawned with beautiful weather after a week long forecast of rain. 14 helpers,
from Michigan and surrounding states, varying from total beginners to the well seasoned
participated in this part of the seminar. Several puppies, young dogs and mature
titled dogs were worked from various breeds giving participants a good taste of
the challenges of helper work. Trial technique was also practiced with excellent
insights by Mark into both club, regional and national helper work.
Sunday was the day for trial work and the USA classification seminar. 12 helpers
participated ranging from We would like to thank Mark Scarberry for taking the time
to come up and work with the region’s helpers. Also thank you to all of the handlers
that worked their dogs and puppies and the spectators that came to support the club.
And a final thank you to our seminar/classification secretary Donna Trouten and
her assistant Marcia Cavan. entry level to those working towards their club and regional
levels. Excellent progress was made by all the helpers especially those that participated
both days. The most notable improvements were made by the one and only female helper,
SMSPC member Alysia Mefford.

Is your club using a properly classified helper?
The Mideastern Region is a leader in promoting helper training. This helps to ensure that the dogs are worked safely and correctly. For a list of Helper Seminars and Evaluations, see the Trial Calendar on the menu to the left.
This is a reminder from the USA Helper Committee regarding the proper use of Helpers
in all authorized USA Events. There has been some confusion regarding the level
of helpers to work events.
The guidelines are:
- All helpers working a USA Event must be current USA members and have a Helper Book
with a classification noted in the book of Basic or higher.
- Entry level helpers may not work events. These are helpers that are
USA Members and have purchased a book, but not attended and passed a seminar/classification.
- Basic level helpers may only work club level events — not regional
championships or nationals.
- Club level helpers may work club level events and be considered for
selection at regional level events.
- Regional level Helpers may work club and regional events and be considered
for national events.
- National level helpers may work any event.
- Teaching helpers may teach as well as work any level of event that
they are selected to work.
The current helper classifications are listed on the USA website. Click here to view the
helper classification list. However, the most recent classification noted
in the helper's book will be the determining one when selecting a helper for trial
work.
In the event that a club does not have a "classified" helper available to work an
event they should contact the Helper Program Director to request
a special circumstances waiver to allow the event to proceed.
It is the Trial Secretary and, secondly, it is the judge's job to verify that the
helper is properly "Classified" to work the event. It is also the helper's responsibility
to know what level event they are allowed to work.
Failure to follow the program rules may lead to unsportsmanlike conduct charges,
revocation of the Helper's book or charges against the club.
The goal and mission of the helper program is to improve the quality , education
and performance of trial helper work at all levels of events. Our committee is here
to help and we will support helpers and clubs in any way to promote the proper progress
of the scheduled event.
Thanks for your continued support of the Helper Program

Chair of National Helper Committee
Club Reports
We have added a section for club trial reports. This is a brief description of your trial. It's an excellent place to spotlight new members, titles, or other special achievements. Roger Hertz of Der Michigan Schutzhund und Polizei opens this section with a nice account of their spring trial. Thanks, Roger!
SV release protocol
In accordance with the resolution of WUSV-General Assembly, the application for the SV judge’s release must be submitted four weeks prior to the scheduled date of the event. Submissions later than four weeks will automatically be rejected by the SV. This also applies to clubs sharing a judge. (both clubs must have their release submitted 4wk prior) Clubs must always pay the 100.00 EUR for the SV processing fee. There is no refund or credit of the fee, even if the event is cancelled.
Verein für Deutsche Schäferhunde (SV)
In short, make certain the SV release is completed at least four weeks prior to your trial. This applies even if the original judge can not make the trial or if your trial date has been changed.

USA Direction
The Sieger show is only two months away but once that is completed the BAC can address a number of topics for our membership. I would like to hear from you as to what you think the biggest obstacles have been to improving our breed and our organization. I have started a list of topics that we should discuss; several of these items have come from fellow board members recently. This list is not all inclusive and is met to only be a starting point.
- Junior Handler Program should we have one and if so, in what format?
- Microchips- we need to educate our membership on the pros and cons of chips vs. tattoos.
DNA Program- with the new breed registry paperwork up and running we have the ability to add DNA numbers to the pedigree. Do we simply take the AKC process and rubber stamp it or do we add additional conditions to the process before we approve it?
- USA website- there is a very active website committee and we can greatly improve the information on the site. What information should we add or change? With the new database system it may be possible to build an online show catalog tool.
- Puppy packets- we need to provide to our membership that registers litters with USA, packets that they can give their puppy buyers. Some items we may want to include in the packet are USA membership applications, the breed standard, a description of Schutzhund, and helpful tips on raising a Schutzhund puppy.
- Sieger show site selection process- always a volatile topic but a better method needs found that benefits the majority of USA members. This topic is also under review by the EB for all USA working events.
- How do we increase club shows? New USA judges, SV judge sharing, make it a requirement to have a conformation show at club level?
- A thorough explanation of the regulations regarding breed surveys needs to be published. I have worked many hours recently researching this topic and will be forwarding it to you soon for comments and suggestions prior to public publication.
- We also need to clearly explain registration to our members. What are the FCI, the SV, the WUSV and what are those relationships? What is the value of our USA registration program and is it different than the USA/SV dual registration?
Please make your replies directly to me.
Thank you for your efforts.

Helper Seminar - Der Michigan Schutzhund Verein
On February 3, the Der Michigan Schutzhund Verein sponsored a helper seminar. Brian Harvey completed his apprenticeship requirements and is expected to soon be approved as a teaching helper. Aaron Graham, a youth member of OG Buckeye, began working on his helper skills at this event.
Helpers who worked on certification included Shawn Murphy, Tim Wild, Brent Eckler, Mark Ptaszek, Aaron Graham. About 15 members of the club came out in the snow and cold to help with the event.
Clarification of elbow certifications for breed surveys
There is currently no requirement with USA to have elbows certified
For a dog breed surveyed under a USA breed warden, there is no requirement certification for elbows. We are awaiting clarification from the SV regarding elbow requirements for USA dogs breed surveyed under SV Judges

Update regarding the status of the USA registration document process
The main issue is not the document itself , the document is, 99% complete.
The registration documents are created by utilizing a custom built database. Without the database being completed, the office would have to hand type each and every line of the document for each and every pedigree. This would have been a very inefficient process.
An additional problem that was not addressed was; where to get data on all German Shepherd pedigrees and to install the data into the database. The document includes a multi-generation pedigree. If we have a properly designed database program it would be able to pull information for every German Shepherd in the database and automatically populate the document. Additionally a fully functional database of all USA registered German Shepherds has other possibilities such as being able to create online show catalogs, etc. It became clear that a product development plan needed to be implemented with phased rollouts.
Phase 1 will be to finish the document, populate the database, and send out all pending registrations. Additional phases may include online catalogs as previously mentioned, web based registrations, mating research, upgrading the software, and hardware improvements.
The document was reviewed at the Nationals, and changes were suggested to improve the document. The changes were forwarded to the database programmer, USA member Laurie Tollifson. Each time a change is made to the document itself , the database program needs to be changed in order to incorporate those changes. We have secured a comprehensive database of German Shepherd pedigrees to populate the program.
I can appreciate the frustration of each and every member that is waiting for the registration document but I made the decision to delay issuing the documents until they are correct and can be efficiently created. I feel that is important that this is done correctly and that the USA members will receive a USA pedigree that is a quality product. We are hoping that this can be completed in January pending any unforeseen technical problems.
